Art + Feminism + Film

Jessica, Lydia, and I had a mini Ace meetup yesterday. We got out of our offices and went to see the documentary, !Women Art Revolution. The film is about the feminist art movement of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. It was a good refresher for me on the important (yet often overlooked) role of women in shaping contemporary art history. We were fortunate in that the filmmaker, Lynn Hershman Leeson, was at the screening and did a Q & A after.

I wrote more about my thoughts on the film here.

The image above is a poster published in 2005 by the Guerrilla Girls, an anonymous art activist group featured in the film that speaks out against sexism and discrimination in the art world.

This is a question taken directly from the film….

Quick, can you name three female artists off the top of your head?

  1. That was a poignant revelation, wasn’t it? No one knew!

  2. I was surprised that no one could name three… Mine would have probably been: Gerogia O’Keeffe (easiest pick), Agnes Martin (my fave), and Eva Hess (throw in a sculptor).

  3. If we’re talking only of painters/sculptors: Frida Kahlo, Artemisia Gentileschi, Yoko Ono.

I guess the real question is: why do women keep taking their clothes off in order to be immortalized?

  4. I don’t mind the nudes or fault the women who posed for them, I just wish there was a more equal distribution of women and men represented in art institutions – both as artists and nudes!!

  5. lol – I was only reacting to the poster. I don’t mind it either…

And I wholeheartedly agree with you!
